The Philadelphia Flyers are on the verge of breaking an NHL record that they might not feel particularly proud of.

On Friday night, the Flyers acquired goaltender Cam Talbot from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Anthony Stolarz. Talbot will now be expected to backup rookie Carter Hart but when he gets his first nod, he’ll manage to make a little history in the process. Talbot won’t be the second goaltender to start for the Flyers this season. Nor will he be the third. Heck, he won’t even be the sixth! Would you believe us if we told you he’d be the EIGHTH tendy to start for the team this season.

EIGHTH LADIES AND GENGTLEMEN!

In case you’ve forgotten (can’t say we’d blame you), the lengthy list includes Hart, Brian Elliott, Calvin Pickard, Stolarz, Michal Neuvirth, Alex Lyon and Mike McKenna. Talk about a goaltender carousal! At least we know which one has rocked the best digs between the pipes so far…

The move makes sense for both sides. The Flyers get a quality backup and mentor for their rookie and Edmonton managed to open up a pro-rated $3.4 million in cap space. It comes just weeks after Edmonton signed 30-year-old Mikko Koskinen to a three-year, $13.5 million extension.

Finally, it looks like Philly’s comfortable between the pipes.
