Joe Louis Arena became the home of the Detroit Red Wings in 1979 and was the team’s home arena for 38 years as the doors officially closed following the conclusion of the 2016-17 season. There was a lot of history in the building as the Red Wings hosted the Stanley Cup Final there six different years (1995, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2008 and 2009) and they actually captured two of the four Stanley Cups that they won during that time on home ice.

These days, though, it doesn’t look like the home or former home of one of the most prestigious NHL franchise’s. Instead, it looks like another gutted out building that was left behind to be torn down.

The demolition started earlier this year in April and is expected to go until sometime early next year, so there’s only a few more months left before the building is entirely gone forever.

As sports fans, it’s always a little sad to see an old barn go down, especially one with as much as history as Joe Louis Arena.
