If you tuned in to a Tampa Bay Lightning game recently, you may have noticed that Tampa’s head coach, Jon Cooper, was dawning Captain America’s famed shield on the lapel of his jacket.

Several hockey fans have been asking about the pins and their significance, so we thought we’d clear things up.

The purpose of it was not a declaration of his allegiance to a side in Marvel’s civil war, however. According to Tampa’s twitter account, the pins are a part of a show of support for a Lightning executive’s six-year-old son who was diagnosed with Lymphoma.

Along with this show of support, Cooper also runs an annual charity fishing tournament, “Coop’s Catch for Kids,” which aims to raise money toward researching pediatric cancer.

Yet another example of the positive impact that sport can have even in the worst of times.
