Year after year we witness former NHL players’ kids take that next step in their own young hockey careers and get another step closer to following in their father’s footsteps.

This year, four former NHL players witnessed their kids have their own names called at the draft and some went higher than their father did.

Nolan Patrick

Nolan Patrick is one of many players to get selected earlier than their father as he went No. 2 overall to the Philadelphia Flyers. His father, Steve Patrick, was selected 20th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in 1980 and finished with 40 goals and 108 points in 250 career games.

Callan Foote

The Tampa Bay Lightning took Callan Foote, son of former NHL defenceman Adam Foote, with the 14th overall pick. Just like Patrick did earlier in the draft, Foote went higher than his father, who went 22nd overall in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft.

Skyler Brind’Amour

Skyler Brind’Amour, son of former Stanley Cup champion Rod Brind’Amour, was selected 177th overall by the Edmonton Oilers. As for his father, he was selected 9th overall by the St. Louis Blues in 1988.

Cayden Primeau

Cayden Primeau is nothing like his father, Keith, on the ice and that’s because the 17-year-old is a goalie. Cayden was selected 199th overall by the Montreal Canadiens, while his father was selected 3rd overall by the Detroit Red Wings back in 1990.

The list doesn’t end there. Former NHLers also saw their kids gets drafted in the WHL and OHL drafts not too long ago.

In the WHL, Jake Sanderson (Geoff Sanderson), Jackson Nieuwendyk (Joe Nieuwendyk), Brayden Morrison (Brendan Morrison) and Josh Doan (Shane Doan) were all drafted in this year's draft.

Meanwhile in the OHL, Tag Bertuzzi (Todd Bertuzzi), Cameron Recchi (Mark Recchi), Nathan Staios (Steve Staios), Mason Primeau (Wayne Primeau) and Luke Pearson (Rob Pearson) were all selected in this year's OHL Draft.

It's only a matter of time until we hear their names called at an NHL Draft.
