Forget the CFL to NFL comparisons — for any rookie to eclipse a record set by an all-time great in the sport is impressive, and Lewis Ward has been nothing short of a revelation for the Ottawa Redblacks since they signed the undrafted kicker out of the University of Ottawa.

On Friday, Ward hit his 45th consecutive field goal to pass the pro football record set by Adam Vinatieri over in the NFL. It was no freebie, either — he had to sink this one from 52 yards out.

Vinatieri is in pursuit of a different record right now — the 45-year-old Colts kicker is just 10 points away from passing Morten Andersen as the NFL’s all-time leading scorer — but we think that Ward’s record for consistency will hold for some time.

Through 16 games, Ward has made 48 of 49 field goals this season, with the lone miss coming in his first game. Two weeks ago he broke the CFL’s record for consecutive field goals made, passing Rene Parades’ 39 straight with this kick.

With two weeks left in the regular season and the Redblacks also playoff-bound, we’ll see just how much longer Ward can carry his record streak of field goals made.
