The Toronto Maple Leafs are scoring at a ridiculous rate, but defending Stanley Cup champion and Washington Capitals forward Lars Eller isn’t convinced that they’re anything special yet.

Eller’s squad fell victim to another Maple Leafs win, losing by two in a 4-2 defeat. Toronto has now scored at least three goals in each of their six games to start the season, but Eller claims they still have some work to do. Following the loss, the Dane insisted that Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin still pose as the biggest threat as an opponent in the league and described the Buds as “a good team, like a lot of others.”

So we get that Sid and Geno have accomplished a ton in the league, however, it shouldn’t take away from what Toronto has been able to accomplish this season. Auston Matthews in particular has been destroying the league with 10 goals and 3 assists now through his first six games. His 10th tonight made him just the fifth player in the Modern NHL era to record 10 goals through his first six games to start the season.

Eller’s comments shouldn’t be taken lightly considering his impressive 2018 postseason run (7 goals, 11 asissts, 19 GP) but it’s a bit surprising to see him downplay the NHL’s leading scorers. The hockey world will be able to witness how Toronto fares against Pittsburgh when the Penguins host the Leafs on Thursday night.
