Anyone that's ever officiated hockey before knows that in some cases, multiple penalties on a single play can be a little confusing for everyone involved.

The officials have to relay what's going on to the timekeepers and penalty box officials, and as we saw Tuesday night in Vegas, that communication is pretty important.

Early in the third period of the Golden Knights and Hurricanes game, David Perron and Trevor van Riemsdyk got into a scrum.  Both players were given roughing penalties, but Perron got an extra two for roughing on the play, so Jonathan Marchessault served the extra two and the Hurricanes went on the power play.

Once the timed penalty was over, though, the penalty box referee and the on-ice officials wouldn't let Marchessault out of the box.

Nobody wanted to let #JonathanMarchessault out of the penalty box πŸ˜‚

Marchessault should have been let out of the box because he was serving the timed penalty, but they must have thought that he was serving the coincidental minors (like van Riemsdyk) and that's why they wouldn't let him out.

The officials did stop the play, so van Riemsdyk was allowed to exit the box along with Marchessault, but Perron stayed in the box as he had to serve his full four minutes in penalties and wait for a whistle.

Nobody scored on the play, so it was pretty meaningless, but looking back at it, it was also quite funny to watch.
