It was a quick hook for Wade Miley in Game 5 of the NLCS. Ostensibly starting the game for the Milwaukee Brewers, he faced one batter — Cody Bellinger, who he walked on five pitches — and was then subsequently pulled by Brewers manager Craig Counsell.

Perhaps viewers watching the game were confused, which, hey, is perfectly understandable, because when do you ever see a starting pitcher pulled after just one batter?

As Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports, however, this is all by the Brewers’ design.

The intention is for Miley to start Game 6, and we can only guess that the plan for him in that one is to face more than a single batter.

Replacing Miley was Brandon Woodruff, who you may remember as the relief pitcher who slapped the third ever home run by a reliever in the playoffs — a 407-foot dinger.
