Fans watching the Winter Classic on New Year's Day will notice something strange about how the two teams playing in the game are classified.

Although the game is in New York at Citi Field, the Buffalo Sabres are actually the 'home team' for the game, not the New York Rangers.

If you're confused as to why the Sabres are the home team for the game in New York against the Rangers, don't worry, you're not the only one.

Not to worry hockey fans, because we've found the answer for you as to why the Sabres are the home team for the Winter Classic.

As per Jon Campbell of Democrat and Chronicle, "Madison Square Garden would risk a lucrative property-tax exemption worth more than $40 million a year if either team plays home games in New York City outside the iconic arena."

This isn't the first time the Rangers have been the away team in New York because of this tax break.  In 2014, the Islanders and Devils were the home teams when they faced the Rangers at Yankee Stadium.

In the grand scheme of things, the fact that the Rangers are the away team for the Winter Classic in New York won't have any impact on the game, but it's an interesting tidbit nonetheless that you can tell your friends about as you watch the game.
