Tonight is Whalers Night for the Carolina Hurricanes, as the team celebrates a part of its history by bringing back the widely adored Hartford Whalers uniforms. It’s the first of just two times this season that the team will hit the ice with the throwback look, and as you can imagine, it has been a highly anticipated affair.

For the first time since 1997, the green Whalers sweater is making its return to NHL action, and Whalers legend Mike Rogers was on hand to christen the moment.

Interestingly, the use of these throwback jerseys have sparked a bit of a controversy among fans. While there are certainly many excited to see the classic uniform make a return, there has also been some backlash to the team’s use of the Hartford look when some resentment still lingers as a result of the team’s move to Carolina in 1997.

Somebody else to weigh in on the controversy is Glen Wesley, who played three seasons with the Whalers and ten with the Hurricanes. He had a surprisingly bold take β€” and possibly, a reasonable solution β€” on the rightful place of the Whalers uniform.
