While waiting for NFL Draft call, No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield was prank called by a friend

In what was a mild surprise, the Cleveland Browns selected Baker Mayfield with the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft over heavy competition from other well-considered quarterbacks, such as Sam Darnold, Josh Allen and Josh Rosen. It was probably a great moment for Mayfield!

Before he received the phone call from the Browns that made things official, however, Mayfield was the recipient of another phone call. While following the draft from a watch party at his house, the first call that he received only purported to be what he expected. Some genius, also at the watch party, apparently had the idea to prank call Mayfield.

“Why would you do that?” said Mayfield. “You’re such a jackass.”

Yeah. It’s pretty cruel, particularly in the moments of suspense that come with being in the running for the first overall pick, but that’s also why it’s a pretty great prank call.

At around the 4:12 mark, Mayfield receives the real deal phone call from the Browns, and his reaction, with his entire family around him, is pretty great to watch. It wouldn’t be all great for him that night, though, because as the first overall pick, Mayfield had to call into Jimmy Kimmel Live, where the talk show host had some jokes for him about his new team. (Well, okay, things still looked pretty good for him.)
