Phil Mickelson was penalized for a very odd reason this past weekend at the U.S. Open as the 48-year-old golfer ran after his putt and hit the ball before it stopped moving, resulting in a two-stroke penalty.

As soon as the veteran pulled off the childish move, fans around the world who were tuning in were quick to react to what they had just witnessed from the five-time major champion and they were not pleased at all. Instead of being disqualified from the remainder of the tournament, Mickelson was only hit with a two-stroke penalty since he hit the ball forward and didn’t stop it, but he felt the punishment should have been worse.

In a recent interview with Golfweek’s Beth Ann Nichols, Mickelson’s wife, Amy, revealed that her husband was ready to withdraw from the tournament after he got home and heard everyone asking for him to be disqualified.

“When he heard that he called Mike Davis and said ‘If I’ve done something that crosses the line that much, then I need to withdraw immediately,” Amy told Beth Ann Nichols.

Mickelson went on with his day like nothing had happened as he posed for photos with fans and signed autographs, but here’s what he said when he was asked if he regretted what he did.

“The real question is, what will I do next? I don’t know.”

Mickelson finished way back of the lead as he finished the tournament +16, 15 shots behind the winner Brooks Koepka.
