The Ottawa Senators took the entire hockey community by surprise on Tuesday evening as they pulled Dion Phaneuf from their game against the Pittsburgh Penguins in order to complete a trade with the Los Angeles Kings.

The Senators were expected to make a deal or two leading up to the NHL trade deadline, but this one ended up happening a lot sooner than everyone had thought.

Since Phaneuf was pulled from the game during the second intermission and the rest of the team went out to finish the game, the rest of the guys didn’t really know what to expect when they returned to the room. When they got back, they found out Phaneuf was no longer a Senator.

Phaneuf appeared in 153 games as a member of the Senators and will now join his fourth NHL club, while Thompson joined the Senators last offseason and appeared in just 43 games with the club.
