The Charlotte Checkers have been the team to beat in the AHL this season as they sit atop of the league standings with 34 wins and 75 points through 55 games. This Friday, the Carolina Hurricanes’ AHL affiliate will host the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the AHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, and they’ll look to channel the top team from the 1980 Winter Olympics.

With the Checkers set to host their Miracle On Ice Night later this week they figured they couldn’t host the special event and not dress the part, so they decided to go ahead and honour the 1980 United States men’s hockey team with jerseys similar to the ones they wore when they captured the gold medal.

The Checkers will hit the ice in USA-themed jerseys which will read ‘CLT’ instead of ‘USA’ across the front of the jerseys and will be auctioned off after the game, with proceeds going towards The Independence Fund
