One part about sports that fans tend to forget about is that at the end of the day it’s a business.
On Wednesday, the Dallas Stars placed forward Gemel Smith on waivers and he ended up getting claimed by the Boston Bruins on Thursday.
The news of the Bruins’ waiver claim during the team’s practice, but that didn’t stop the guys from taking a moment out of their daily routine to wish their now former teammate well on his new journey with his new club.
The Dallas Stars selected Smith with the 104th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and he went on to play 186 games in the AHL with the Texas Stars (35 goals, 51 assists, 86 points) and 77 games with the Stars (11 goals, nine assists, 20 points). However, after registering just two goals and three points in 14 games this season, the Stars decided to move on.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Stars stop their practice to say goodbye to a player before he joined his new team as they did the same thing when Remi Elie was claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Sabres in October.
